4 Minute Warning 23. Karma Police The show immediately preceding this (the first night at Hammersmith) is the one that gets many plaudits from Radiohead fans for one simple reason: it opens with the live debut of “Videotape.” Don’t be deceived by the hype: this is the better show, and (more importantly) this contains the single greatest live performance of “Videotape” the band has ever given. But “Videotape” isn’t the only reason Hammersmith 2 is the best of the early 2006 shows (and the one worth owning despite its somewhat dodgy AUD quality).
They never played a better or more urgent version of “Open Pick”/“Jigsaw,” (with quality Ed counterpoint during the first instrumental break and an OK Computer-style guitar solo from Jonny in the final one). 'Go Slowly' is here in its original form, with the “Thief”-like drumming. 'Arpeggi' has its original instrumental intro. A late period “Black Star.” And one of the few 2006 versions of “4 Minute Warning” that won’t make you want to click the skip button.

There There The 6/17/06 Bonnaroo Festival and 8/15/06 Avenches shows are much more well-known than this one (and crucially, are the only two SBD recordings available from 2006), but the latter only features two of the “new” songs – “Down Is The New Up” and “Bangers And Mash” – and the former, while lengthy, is otherwise a fairly pedestrian festival setlist & performance. The real gems from the North American leg of the 2006 pre-In Rainbows tour (which ranks alongside the 2000 Kid A tour as their best) is this show from Toronto. What we have here isn’t a SBD, it’s actually something far better, and which would come to define the best of the tapes available from this leg: a very well-assembled matrix of several different high-quality AUD recordings. The result is a live experience that is authentically superior to a typical SBD recording: the tape ‘breathes’, giving the listener a great feel for the acoustics of the concert hall, and yet the sound fidelity is crystal clear and audience noise is minimized.
As a result, Toronto is one of the few shows listed here that will give you a truly authentic sense of what it felt like to actually be at the show, sitting in a great seat at the center of the venue, near the desk. And unlike Bonnaroo, this show features a full complement of early renditions of the In Rainbows material complemented by the best of Radiohead’s earlier stuff.
Here you’ll find the definitive full-band early arrangements of “Arpeggi,” “Down Is The New Up,” “15 Step” (a dominant performance), “Nude,” and “Bodysnatchers,” as well as an ultra-rare “Let Down” and “Videotape” well along its way to not being as good as it once was. Plus, ten years after it was written, maybe the ultimate “Climbing Up The Walls.” Bonnaroo gets all the hype (including from the band themselves), but Toronto is the one you really need to own if you’re going to choose just one 2006 show. Get this, check out the Hammersmith 5/19 and some of the later 2006 matrix recordings from Montreal and Berkeley, and feel confident that you’ve got the best of this tour in hand. 01.
